There's plenty of utilities to keep your XP system safe from prying eyes, but Antispy Complete is among the very best. Also check out WiFi Security.
This category includes a plethora of sneaky tactics by web page owners, big companies, and marketing creeps. AdAware does the job quite well.
You can eliminate about 90% of the above by using non-Microsoft products (besides XP). One easy way to start would be using Mozilla's FireFox
